SUMMARY:Leamington History Cafe: The Long March
DESCRIPTION:In May 2025\, Stuart Green organised and took part in a Charity
  Bike Ride which followed the "Long March" route from Stalag Luft 3 to Ber
 lin undertaken by his father towards the end of WW2. As Russian forces adv
 anced from the East\, the German military hastily evacuated its POW camps\
 , compelling some 80000 British\, Commonwealth\, US and European prisoners
  of war (and their guards) to march hundreds of miles under harsh conditio
 ns resulting from the worst winter in the region for 50 years. Many perish
 ed due to exhaustion\, malnutrition\, and the brutal cold. The talk will c
 over both the ride itself and the places visited along the way\, while als
 o providing some more historical context of this little known episode from
  WW2 which was a remarkable example of resilience and sacrifice on the par
 t of those involved. To date\, Stuart and the team have raised over £1300
 0 for their chosen charities\, the RAF Association/Benevolent Fund\, the B
 ritish Legion\, Coventry Cathedral and the POW Museum in Poland.
