In May 2025, Stuart Green organised and took part in a Charity Bike Ride which followed the “Long March” route from Stalag Luft 3 to Berlin undertaken by his father towards the end of WW2. As Russian forces advanced from the East, the German military hastily evacuated its POW camps, compelling some 80000 British, Commonwealth, US and European prisoners of war (and their guards) to march hundreds of miles under harsh conditions resulting from the worst winter in the region for 50 years. Many perished due to exhaustion, malnutrition, and the brutal cold. The talk will cover both the ride itself and the places visited along the way, while also providing some more historical context of this little known episode from WW2 which was a remarkable example of resilience and sacrifice on the part of those involved. To date, Stuart and the team have raised over £13000 for their chosen charities, the RAF Association/Benevolent Fund, the British Legion, Coventry Cathedral and the POW Museum in Poland.
