This Gallery is part of a series which records “Details of Buildings in Royal Leamington Spa”. It includes the Heads or Capitals of Columns and Pilasters. These more or less ornate and decorative features mimic Greek and Roman Classical features of buildings. Some of the designs are more original than others but most of them are probably based on designs in pattern books. The basic style of the capital is described as the ‘order’. The simplest of these is Doric and none are included here; the next order is Ionic and there are a couple of examples denoted with the letter ‘I’; more complex and based on acanthus leaves is the Corinthian order shown here by the letter ‘C’; the remaining examples have strayed from the classical orders. The ancient originals were mostly carved from stone but the examples in Leamington are likely to be cast from stucco or plaster. Several of them are damaged either by decay or accidental damage; detail is also masked by successive layers of paint.
